Journalist John Reed is swept from New York’s bohemian circles into the upheaval of the Russian Revolution, chasing both the story and a political cause he hopes to carry back to the American working class. Warren Beatty is Reed, an ambitious writer whose public life runs alongside his volatile relationship with Diane Keaton’s Louise Bryant, a writer and activist with ambitions of her own. Jack Nicholson appears as playwright Eugene O’Neill, part of the artistic world orbiting them in the 1910s and early 1920s. Moving between America and revolutionary Russia, the film follows politics, journalism, and romance as Reed’s ideals collide with the demands of history.
