In Victorian England, Rod Taylor is an inventor who builds a machine to travel through time and tests it by hurtling into wars, ruin, and an unimaginably distant future. What he finds in the year 802,701 is stranger than his parlor theories: a peaceful world above ground, an underground civilization below it, and humanity divided into the childlike Eloi and the predatory Morlocks. Yvette Mimieux appears among the Eloi as one of the few figures to draw him into this future society, while the film mixes drawing-room science fiction with crumbling landscapes and looming catastrophe.
