Eric O'Neill is a low-level FBI surveillance specialist who thinks he's landed a career-making promotion when he's assigned to clerk for celebrated senior agent Robert Hanssen. Ryan Phillippe's O'Neill soon learns the assignment has another purpose: investigators suspect Hanssen (Chris Cooper) of spying for the Soviet Union and Russia, and O'Neill's job is to get close enough to prove it. As he balances bureau secrecy, Hanssen's demanding mentorship, and the risk of being found out, the film turns an office posting into a tightly watched operation built on surveillance, routine, and growing suspicion.
