On the Waterfront
CrimeDramaRomanceThriller108 min
On Hoboken’s docks, ex-boxer Terry Malloy is a longshoreman caught between the mob-connected union leaders he works for and his growing conscience. Marlon Brando is Terry, a former prizefighter pulled into the orbit of boss Johnny Friendly and the code of silence that keeps corruption, extortion, and murder in place. As pressure from the authorities builds, Terry is also forced to reckon with family loyalty through his brother Charley, with Rod Steiger in the role. Directed by Elia Kazan, the film keeps close to the piers and union halls of New Jersey, where every job, favor, and warning carries a cost.
