Anthony Hopkins is Corky, a painfully shy magician who finds sudden success as a ventriloquist with Fats, the foul-mouthed dummy who seems to run the act. When a major TV break and a required physical send him into a panic, Corky flees to a nearly deserted Catskills resort run by his old sweetheart, Ann-Margret's Peggy Ann. Burgess Meredith is the agent trying to hold onto Corky's future as the line between performer and puppet starts to blur.
