Astronaut Taylor crash-lands on a distant world where apes speak, govern, and treat humans as animals to be hunted, caged, and studied. Charlton Heston is Taylor, the survivor trying to make sense of a society that looks primitive on the surface and rigidly ordered underneath. As he’s pulled into the ape hierarchy, Roddy McDowall and Kim Hunter are among the ruling species that takes an unusual interest in him. The film turns a space-mission setup into a dystopian struggle over language, power, and who gets recognized as fully human.
