In 1913 Oklahoma, derrick owner Lena Doyle refuses to sell her land, drilling stubbornly for oil while powerful oil companies close in. Faye Dunaway is Lena, running the operation with help from her father and a drifting hired hand. Jack Palance's company man keeps pressing her to take the money and walk away, as Stanley Kramer's film pits one small outfit against the money and muscle of the oil boom.
