In 1974, 13-year-old Vada Sultenfuss is given a school assignment to write about someone she admires and has never met, and she chooses the mother she barely remembers. Anna Chlumsky is Vada, now living with her father and pregnant stepmother when the project sends her from home to Los Angeles to stay with her Uncle Phil and dig into her family history. There, Austin O'Brien's Nick becomes her guide around the city as Vada follows scattered clues about her mother while navigating first kisses, new relatives, and the uneasy shift from childhood into adolescence.
