In 1892, a U.S. Army captain who has spent his career fighting Native Americans is ordered to escort a dying Cheyenne chief and his family from New Mexico back to Montana. Christian Bale is the hard, embittered officer, with Wes Studi opposite him as the man he must protect on a trek through country scarred by gunfights, raids, and old grudges. Along the way they cross paths with Rosamund Pike's grief-stricken widow, whose family has been slaughtered on the plains, turning the mission into a tense passage through violence, prejudice, and the aftermath of war.
