Alec Leamas is a British agent at the frayed edge of the Cold War, and instead of leaving the field, he takes on one more assignment tied to East Germany. Richard Burton is Leamas, worn down by years of espionage and drawn into an operation where loyalties, motives, and even failure are hard to read. Alongside him is Claire Bloom’s Nan, a librarian whose connection to Leamas threatens to complicate the mission. In 1960s Europe, the film keeps its focus on tradecraft, bureaucracy, and the bleak calculations behind life on both sides of the Iron Curtain.
