In 1958 Virginia, Mildred Jeter and Richard Loving marry knowing their interracial relationship already draws scrutiny, but the ceremony turns that hostility into criminal charges. Ruth Negga is Mildred, holding her family together as the couple is forced out of their hometown, opposite Joel Edgerton’s Richard, a bricklayer who wants little more than a house, a job, and a life with his wife. As the years pass, what begins as a private marriage becomes a legal battle over Virginia’s ban on interracial marriage, pushing the Lovings toward the Supreme Court.
