When a ring-shaped device unearthed in Egypt is finally decoded, Army colonel Jack O'Neil (Kurt Russell) joins James Spader's Daniel Jackson, the linguist who cracks its symbols, on a mission through a wormhole to another world. There they find a desert civilization built around pyramids, hieroglyphs, and a ruler called Ra, whose power ties alien technology to the myths of ancient Egypt. As the team tries to understand the planet's language and the people living under Ra's rule, a military expedition becomes an uprising on a distant desert world.
