In late-1920s Kansas, Natalie Wood is a fragile teenager whose romance with a boy from the town’s most powerful family turns into a knot of desire, family pressure, and rules neither of them knows how to escape. Opposite her, Warren Beatty makes his screen debut as the handsome young man at the center of that forbidden relationship. As the Roaring ’20s give way to the stock market crash and the Depression, their high-school love is strained by sexual repression, class expectations, and parents determined to control what comes next.
