Dersu Uzala

ActionAdventureDrama144 min

On an expedition through the unmapped forests of Russia’s Far East, military explorer Vladimir Arsenyev (Yuriy Solomin) meets Dersu Uzala, a Goldi hunter whose knowledge of the Siberian wilderness guides the party through the taiga. As the two men travel together, Arsenyev’s formal military world gives way to a deep friendship shaped by weather, distance, and Dersu’s instinct for the land around them. Maksim Munzuk’s Dersu is observant, practical, and at ease in terrain that others barely understand, while Akira Kurosawa gives the rivers, grasslands, snow, and even the threat of a tiger as much presence as any character.
