La Marseillaise

DramaWar135 min

As the French Revolution gathers force, Jean Renoir follows events from two vantage points: the citizens of Marseille and the court of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. The story moves through the upheaval’s early years up to the autumn of 1792, shifting between working people, politically engaged bourgeois, and members of the upper class trying to hold onto the old order. Pierre Renoir and Lise Delamare are among the large ensemble in a film that treats the Revolution as both a public convulsion and a collection of private lives caught inside it.
