Ridley Scott follows Napoleon Bonaparte from ambitious artillery officer to French emperor, tracing his climb through the upheaval of late 18th- and early 19th-century France. Joaquin Phoenix is Napoleon, shown both as a military strategist and as a man whose private life keeps colliding with his public ambition. Opposite him, Vanessa Kirby's Joséphine shapes the story as wife, lover, and a constant destabilizing presence. The film moves between court intrigue, brutal Napoleonic War campaigns, and a close look at a ruler whose drive for power is bound up with an obsessive, volatile marriage.
