In early-1960s Hong Kong, writer Chow Mo-wan is moving through a series of affairs after losing the woman he still measures everyone else against. Tony Leung Chiu-wai's Chow channels those encounters into a futuristic story called 2046, where travelers ride a train toward a place bound up with memory. As women played by Ziyi Zhang and Gong Li enter and leave his life, Wong Kar-Wai folds the past, the imagined future, and Chow's unfinished longing into the same story.
