Former pool hustler Fast Eddie Felson sees a path back into the game when he meets Vincent Lauria, a gifted young player with plenty of talent and very little restraint. Paul Newman is Eddie, a veteran operator who knows that winning in pool halls is as much about reading people as making shots; Tom Cruise's Vincent has the nerve and flash that make him hard to manage. As the two hit bars and money-game rooms, Eddie tries to teach him the angles of hustling, while Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio's Carmen watches the partnership with caution. Martin Scorsese frames it around ego, mentorship, and the uneasy pull of competition.
