In 1922, a proud farmer conspires to murder his wife for financial gain and persuades his teenage son to help him do it. Thomas Jane is the rancher, writing out a confession as the crime begins to warp life on the family farm; his wife (Molly Parker) becomes the center of the plan when a fight over the land turns deadly. From there, the story stays close to the farmhouse and cornfields, where secrecy, guilt, blood, and rat-filled hallucinations press in on father and son.
