Kodi Smit-McPhee is Jay Cavendish, a teenage Scot crossing late-19th-century Colorado to find the young woman he’s fixated on. Out on the frontier, he falls in with Silas (Michael Fassbender), a guarded drifter who agrees to guide and protect him for cash. As Jay pushes westward, their route draws the attention of bounty hunters and other armed men moving across the same landscape. The film follows their uneasy partnership through open country, roadside camps, and sudden shootouts, with Jay’s romantic devotion colliding with the harder rules of the American frontier.
