After surviving the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, Jeff Bauman wakes up in a hospital without his legs and becomes an important witness as authorities search for the attackers. Jake Gyllenhaal is Jeff, a working-class Bostonian thrust into national attention just as his private life is thrown into upheaval. Tatiana Maslany’s Erin stays at the center of that upheaval, as their relationship is tested by rehabilitation, family pressure, and the expectations placed on Jeff in the bombing’s aftermath. The film keeps close to the routines of recovery — hospital rooms, wheelchairs, physical therapy, and the strain of being seen as a symbol while trying to rebuild a life.
