Topsy-Turvy
ComedyDramaMusical160 min
In 1884 London, after Princess Ida lands with lukewarm notices, the long-running partnership between librettist W.S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan begins to fray. Jim Broadbent is Gilbert, exacting and restless, while Allan Corduner’s Sullivan is caught between popular operetta and his own artistic ambitions. Mike Leigh follows the pair, their producers, and a crowded company of singers and actors through rehearsals, backstage quarrels, and the daily routines of Victorian theater as an encounter with Japanese art helps shape the comic opera that will become The Mikado.
