In 1950s Pittsburgh, Denzel Washington is Troy Maxson, a sanitation worker whose abandoned baseball future still shapes the way he treats his wife, Rose, and their sons. Viola Davis’s Rose carries the strain of a household built around Troy’s pride, frustration, and hard rules, as old disappointments and everyday pressures push against the family from all sides. Directed by Washington from August Wilson’s play, the film stays close to one working-class home, where money, race, fatherhood, and long-held resentments turn ordinary conversations into confrontations.
