In 1987 Harlem, Gabourey Sidibe is Claireece “Precious” Jones, a 16-year-old carrying her second pregnancy while living under the control of an abusive mother and the shadow of an absent father. At home, Mo’Nique is the angry parent who demands constant service and inflicts both physical and emotional punishment. School is no refuge: Precious has reached ninth grade with good marks while hiding that she can’t read. Lee Daniels’ film stays tightly focused on her daily life, where family violence, poverty, and isolation shape every room she enters.
