Fugui, the son of a wealthy family, gambles away his inheritance and spends the next three decades trying to keep his household together as mainland China is remade by civil war, collectivization, and the Cultural Revolution. You Ge is Fugui, forced from privilege into peasant life, while Gong Li’s Jiazhen becomes the steadier center of the family. Directed by Zhang Yimou, the film follows their marriage from the 1940s into the 1960s, charting how political upheaval keeps reshaping work, status, and family life around them.
