On the USS Alabama, a disputed order during a nuclear standoff pushes the chain of command toward mutiny. Denzel Washington is Lt. Cmdr. Ron Hunter, a highly recommended but relatively green executive officer newly assigned to the submarine, where Capt. Frank Ramsey wants to move fast against a breakaway Russian republic with access to nuclear warheads. When an incomplete radio message leaves the launch order in question, Hunter and Ramsey split over whether firing first prevents disaster or starts it. James Gandolfini and Viggo Mortensen are among the Alabama crew caught inside the steel corridors, sonar pings, and rigid procedures of a boat built for nuclear war.
