Before Pelé became a global football icon, he was a boy in the slums of São Paulo, practicing with improvised balls and helping support his family. Kevin de Paula is the future legend in this portrait of his early years, following his rise from street football to Brazil’s national team and the 1958 World Cup. The film keeps close to the pressures around that ascent, including Pelé’s bond with his father, while Vincent D’Onofrio and Seu Jorge round out the adult world around him. It’s a coming-of-age sports biography rooted in 1950s Brazil and the making of a national hero.
