Sergeant York
DramaWar134 min
In rural Tennessee, Alvin York is a hard-drinking troublemaker whose religious conversion turns him into a committed pacifist just as World War I pulls him toward the draft. Gary Cooper is York, caught between his faith and the Army’s demands, with Joan Leslie and Walter Brennan part of the home-and-hillside world he’s reluctant to leave. Howard Hawks follows York from backwoods farm life to infantry service in Europe, where his gift with a rifle collides with his moral objections and pushes him into the national spotlight.
