When a young soprano is thrust into the lead of an avant-garde staging of Verdi’s Macbeth, the promotion turns into a nightmare. Cristina Marsillach is the singer at the center of Dario Argento’s 1987 Italian thriller, stalked by a masked admirer who murders the people around her and forces her to witness each attack. The opera house becomes both stage and trap, with rehearsals, backstage corridors, and performances folding into a series of brutal set pieces. Ian Charleson appears in the world around her as the killings close in and the line between memory, obsession, and performance starts to blur.
