Barbara Stanwyck is Vance Jeffords, the strong-willed daughter of a dominant New Mexico cattle baron. In 1870s New Mexico Territory, her father, T. C. (Walter Huston), rules his ranch and his family with the same hard hand, and their struggle over land, inheritance, and Vance’s choice of husband turns into an open feud. As squatters press in and money problems threaten the estate, personal grudges and business battles keep tightening around the Jeffords household. Wendell Corey and Judith Anderson are part of the circle around them, where romance, status, and control of the land are never separate for long.
