In 1956 Israel, a chance encounter sends Jewish teacher Rachel Stein back to the Netherlands of 1944, where a failed escape leaves her the sole survivor of a German ambush and pulls her into the Dutch resistance. Carice van Houten’s Rachel is sent to infiltrate Nazi headquarters by getting close to SS officer Ludwig Müntze (Sebastian Koch), even as suspicion spreads through the underground network sheltering her. Paul Verhoeven builds the story around forged papers, safe houses, and shifting allegiances, with Rachel moving between resistance cells and German offices while trying to uncover who arranged the massacre on the river.
