Inherent Vice
ComedyCrimeDramaMysteryRomance149 min
At the turn of the 1970s in Los Angeles, marijuana-hazed private investigator Doc Sportello is pulled into a disappearance case when an ex-girlfriend shows up with a story about her wealthy new boyfriend. Joaquin Phoenix is Doc, moving through a maze of cops, lawyers, loan sharks, dopers, and the shadowy Golden Fang as one missing-person search starts linking to other cases. Katherine Waterston is the ex who sets everything in motion, and Paul Thomas Anderson frames the whole mystery as a sun-bleached noir with surf culture, counterculture drift, and mounting paranoia closing in around Doc.
