After losing their baby, Kate and John adopt 9-year-old Esther, hoping a new child might steady a household already shaken by grief. Vera Farmiga’s Kate is unsettled almost immediately, while Isabelle Fuhrman’s Esther presents a neat, gifted exterior that begins to crack in private. As Kate’s warnings go unheard and John pulls away, suspicion spreads through the family and ordinary domestic spaces start to feel unstable. Jaume Collet-Serra keeps the focus close to the house, where mourning, distrust, and sudden bursts of violence turn an adoption story into something much darker.
