On a single crowded night in Chicago, Gig Young is cop Johnny Kelly, a patrolman torn between his badge, an unhappy marriage, and a plan to leave town with his stripper girlfriend, Angel Face. Mala Powers gives Angel Face a flinty presence as she tires of Johnny's wavering, while William Talman's crooked lawyer Biddel offers him an illegal job that could finally buy their escape. What follows folds police routine, back-room schemes, and after-dark city life into a knot of competing plans, with the camera moving through streets, clubs, and elevated tracks as Johnny's shift edges toward a breaking point.
