In 1990s East Texas, assistant funeral director Bernie Tiede is one of Carthage’s most beloved figures, known for his manners, his church singing, and his way with grieving families. Jack Black is Bernie, whose close friendship with wealthy widow Marjorie Nugent grows increasingly strained as her demands begin to consume his life. Shirley MacLaine’s Marjorie is sharp, controlling, and impossible to ignore, and when the relationship turns into a criminal case, Matthew McConaughey’s district attorney steps in. Richard Linklater frames the story with a small-town, true-crime feel, letting the town’s gossip and loyalties shape the portrait of a man no one thought they knew.
