Paul Newman's Frank Galvin is a washed-up Boston lawyer, drinking heavily and scraping by on ambulance-chasing cases when a medical malpractice suit arrives with an easy settlement already on the table. Instead of cashing out, he decides to take it to court, turning a straightforward payout into a fight with higher stakes for his clients and for his own battered sense of purpose. In Sidney Lumet's hands, the case becomes a battle of nerve, procedure, and reputation, with Charlotte Rampling and Jack Warden moving through Galvin's fraying personal and professional world as he tries to stand up in court again.
