Desperate for one last strike, Matthew McConaughey is Kenny Wells, a shabby prospector and relentless hustler who heads to Indonesia in search of gold buried deep in the jungle. He teams up with Édgar Ramírez’s equally down-on-his-luck geologist for a long-shot expedition that quickly grows far beyond a remote mining camp. As rumors of a massive discovery spread, Kenny finds himself pulled from mud and mosquitoes into the moneyed world of investors, lawyers, and Wall Street scrutiny. Loosely inspired by the Bre-X mining scandal, the film follows a man chasing a fortune that keeps getting bigger, murkier, and harder to control.
