Recently widowed Lady Susan Vernon arrives at her in-laws' estate in 1790s England to let scandalous rumors cool and to begin a practical new campaign: finding advantageous husbands for herself and her reluctant daughter. Kate Beckinsale is Lady Susan, moving through visits, gossip, and carefully staged flirtation while she tries to outmaneuver a watchful family. Two men complicate the plan — the handsome Reginald DeCourcy and the wealthy Sir James Martin — and Chloë Sevigny is among those drawn into Lady Susan's calculations.
