Charlotte Cantilini thinks her search for Mr. Right is over when she falls for surgeon Kevin Fields, but the engagement puts her squarely in the path of his mother, Viola. Jennifer Lopez is Charlie, an office temp trying to build a future with Michael Vartan’s polished doctor, while Jane Fonda’s Viola — a recently fired TV personality terrified of losing her son’s attention — turns herself into a one-woman sabotage campaign. With Viola’s longtime assistant Ruby (Wanda Sykes) helping execute the schemes, the romance quickly becomes a household standoff built on passive-aggressive dinners, public humiliations, and increasingly direct retaliation.
