The Island

Drama112 min

On a remote island in northern Russia, Pyotr Mamonov is Father Anatoly, an Orthodox monk whose disruptive habits and strange devotion unsettle the small monastery around him. To the other monks, he’s an embarrassment and a mystery; to the visitors who make the trip across the water, Anatoly is a holy man with gifts for healing, exorcism, and prophecy. Between monastery routines and the arrival of the afflicted, the film follows a figure whose baffling conduct draws scorn inside the cloister and reverence from the people outside it.
