Brooklyn teenager Chantel Mitchell refuses to become “just another girl on the IRT,” another young woman boxed in by the future her neighborhood seems to expect. Ariyan A. Johnson is Chantel, a sharp, outspoken high school student with plans for medical school, a family, and a life beyond the projects and the street-corner routine her friends have come to accept. As she pushes toward that future, personal and sexual pressures begin to complicate the path she has laid out for herself. The film stays tightly with Chantel’s voice and point of view as she measures ambition against the realities around her.
