In the Realm of the Senses
DramaRomance109 min
In 1930s Japan, Eiko Matsuda is Sada Abe, a woman whose affair with her master draws her and the man, played by Tatsuya Fuji, into an increasingly private, obsessive sexual bond. Drawing on the Sada Abe incident, the film stays close to the couple as their relationship deepens into jealousy, control, and ritualized sex. Nagisa Oshima foregrounds the intensity and enclosure of that affair against the backdrop of a tightly controlled Japan on the eve of war.
