Two decades after the murders of Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G., former LAPD detective Russell Poole is still chasing the case that never closed. Johnny Depp is Poole, pulled back into the investigation when Forest Whitaker’s reporter Jack Jackson starts pressing for answers about why the trail went cold. As the two compare notes in Los Angeles, their search leads past dead ends and into allegations of obstruction, corruption, and buried evidence inside the department. Brad Furman’s film frames a notorious unsolved case through the uneasy partnership between a detective who won’t let go and a journalist trying to salvage his name.
