After a leaked newspaper item ties Michael Gallagher to a murder investigation in Miami, his life starts to unravel overnight. Paul Newman's Gallagher insists the story is built on a false impression, but clearing his name means revealing an alibi that could pull an innocent woman into public view. Sally Field is Megan Carter, the reporter who chases the scoop and then has to reckon with the damage it causes. As Gallagher confronts her and federal investigators keep the pressure on, the film follows the collision between press access, prosecutorial leaks, and the cost of putting someone's name on the front page.
