In Victorian London, a small group hunts for a missing girl and finds the city overrun with things that should not exist. Vanessa Ives, a young woman plagued by violent visions and a sinister connection to the supernatural, joins explorer Sir Malcolm Murray as their search leads from opium dens and grand houses to laboratories, séances, and encounters with creatures drawn from classic gothic lore. As they pull in allies with their own secrets, the mission grows darker and more personal. The deeper Vanessa goes into this hidden world, the more it becomes clear that the forces gathering around her are not random, and that saving one life may mean confronting an ancient evil fixed on her.
