Russian poet Andrei Gorchakov (Oleg Yankovskiy) travels through Italy with his interpreter, Eugenia, to research an 18th-century Russian composer who once lived abroad. The trip turns inward as Andrei, cut off from home and language, is overwhelmed by homesickness and drawn toward two figures around him: Domiziana Giordano's Eugenia, whose beauty preoccupies him, and Erland Josephson's Domenico, a radical mystic fixated on spiritual redemption. Dreams, memory, and the pull of Russia begin to overtake the present as Andrei moves through a foreign country that never feels fully his.
