A small-time thief ducks into a movie audition while fleeing the police and is mistaken for an actor, which lands him in Los Angeles preparing for a screen test as a detective. To help him fake the part, he’s paired with a sharp private eye named “Gay” Perry, and the lesson quickly turns into the real thing when a dead body, a missing woman, and a string of crooked connections pull them into a murder case. As Harry tries to keep up, an old crush reenters his life and the line between rehearsal and investigation disappears. Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer lead Shane Black’s fast-talking noir send-up.
