As the Red Death plague spreads through a medieval Italian province, Vincent Price is Prince Prospero, a sadistic nobleman who seals himself inside his castle and turns it into a refuge for aristocratic guests while the villages outside suffer. Hazel Court and Jane Asher move through Prospero’s private world of feasts, cruelty, and satanic ritual, where the walls are meant to keep death at a distance. Roger Corman’s film takes Poe’s premise and expands it into a chamber piece of masked revels, religious dread, and decay pressing in from beyond the gates.
