At a remote British outpost in Natal during the Anglo-Zulu War, two junior officers are left to hold Rorke’s Drift against a far larger Zulu force. Stanley Baker is Lt. Chard, an engineer officer suddenly responsible for the defense, while Michael Caine’s Lt. Bromhead brings rank, reserve, and a brittle class tension to the command. Based on the 1879 battle, the film stays close to the garrison as soldiers argue, organize, and brace for an attack after word of nearby bloodshed reaches the camp. The setting is stark and exposed, with military ritual giving way to siege preparations.
