At a luxury hotel in the Swiss Alps, two old friends spend their holiday taking stock of age, work, and the lives they’ve built. Michael Caine is Fred Ballinger, a retired composer and conductor who resists calls to return to the stage, while Harvey Keitel’s Mick Boyle is a filmmaker trying to finish the screenplay for what he believes may be his last important film. Around them, family strains and artistic doubts keep pressing in: Rachel Weisz is Fred’s daughter Lena, and Paul Dano’s Jimmy, a younger actor at the same resort, is searching for a way into his next performance.
